In a TikTok video that has already gone viral, a Walgreens customer showed off a device to steal credit card information, which was installed in an ATM at a Chicago branch.
Currently, the video of the user @chicagoslots already has more than a million views. The user recorded himself removing the device, known as a skimmer, from the ATM, which was in a Walgreens at the corner of Belmont and Paulina streets in Chicago.
Skimmers are generally small devices that are made to fit exactly into an ATM card reader. This makes people put their cards in the skimmers where the criminals copy the personal data of the victim.
In addition to copying the card details, the skimmer leaves the victim to do their ATM operations as normal, so the person never realizes that there is a security problem with the plastic.
In the video, @chicagoslots said: “I went to withdraw money for my haircut and I found out when I put my card in, something didn’t feel right (in the machine). If you used the ATM at Walgreens on Belmont and Paulina, your card has been compromised.”
The video shows @chicagoslots using all of his force on the ATM card reader to remove the skimmer. To one side of him is a store employee, who at the end of the video asks for the assistance of security personnel to take charge of the device.
According to the Daily Dot, @chicagoslots had already suffered a $1,400 robbery last year because of one of these devices, so now he checks every ATM he uses for anomalies.
She also said that after the video ended, he left, although the manager later tipped her off that the police were already taking care of the skimmer issue.
