a-group-of-immigrants-arrive-in-chiapas-to-request-free-transit-to-the-united-states

This Saturday thousands of migrants from different countries arrived in Chiapas, after crossing the Suchiate River irregularly to request the Multiple Migration Format (FMM) that allows them to transit for 45 days in the country. The arrival of these undocumented immigrants reflects the unprecedented increase in the migratory flow in the region, with more than 2,7600 undocumented immigrants intercepted by the United States.

According to information from local media, the immigrants arrived at the Provisional Care Center of the National Institute of Migration (INM), in Tapachula. This year Mexico reported an annual increase of more than 43% in the number of people in an irregular situation in Mexico in 2022, when it detected 444,439.

According to the EFE news agency, the authorities deployed vans and buses to transfer the migrants from the different control points to this Provisional Care Center, where the 45-day document is processed and issued.

The Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States, Alejandro Mayorkas, assured last week that the US authorities expect an increase in the migratory flow on the northern border of Mexico next May. The Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) reported that during the month of March there was a 25% increase in immigration detentions at the southern border of the United States.

Mayorkas affirmed that the Administration of President Joe Biden is “increasing resources” for border security, in addition to the management of migrant cases to deal with this scenario. “Our entire immigration system is broken, I think there is unanimity about it,” stressed the person in charge of security.

Among the measures that the Biden Administration will take before the eventual end of Title 42 on May 11 are increasing the consequences for those who cross the border irregularly and expanding legal migration routes. The Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) reported a drop in detentions at the southern border of the United States for the second consecutive month in March, after Joe Biden extended expulsions to early 2023.
