Heavy rains Sunday caused flooding, downed trees and heavy traffic in the Tri-state area. Specifically in The Bronx, severe weather caused a retaining wall to collapse in Tremont.
The wall turned to rubble on East 180th Street behind Valentine Avenue Monday morning. The structure was connected to a six-story apartment building, which was evacuated at approximately 5:45 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
Officials say the building can now be occupied, except for the ground floor, leaving five apartments still vacated.
For his part, Mayor Eric Adams sent a message in which he announced that no one was injured and that the Red Cross was helping the inhabitants of the building.
In Yonkers, heavy rainfall is also suspected to have caused a retaining wall to collapse at Elizabeth Place. One homeowner said the wall collapsed directly into his living room and dining room.
On the other hand, in Cross Island Parkaway was one of several parkways that turned into a raging river during Sunday’s heavy storm, ABC 7 NY reported.
“Bronx River, shut down, Sprain, shut down. I didn’t take 287 because I thought the traffic would be nasty. Hutchinson closed,” said Rich Berrios.
It took Berrios about 40 more minutes to get from White Plains to Yonkers, but he was able to keep moving. He avoided the mess at the Saw Mill River Parkaway in Yonkers, north of McLean Avenue.
Likewise, in Queens drivers were stranded on a flooded highway.
“We were out there for an hour calling 911 four times. The firemen came, they said they couldn’t help us. 311 couldn’t help us. ‘” Jerry Dellova said.
In Chelsea, rescue teams arrived Monday morning to clear trees that fell on parked vehicles.
A witness, identified as Janice Yu, reported broken branches and damaged cars near 7th Avenue and West 21st Street. No injuries have been reported.
Drivers in Jersey City and Newark were able to see high levels of water on the roads Sunday night. Although many vehicles were trapped on the roads, there were no injuries so far.
