This Friday UEFA announced the winner of the best goal of the Champions League season 2022/2023 according to the fans, the winner was Lionel Messi, who with his goal against Benfica for the partial 1-0 on the third day of the phase groups, took the recognition after the voting closed in which millions of fans voted for their favorite goal.

The candidate goals were chosen by a panel of UEFA technical observers, who filtered the top 10 goals of the competition. Voting was then opened through the official website of the Champions League to determine the winner.

The Argentinian’s goal came from an excellent collective move to end with a pass between the lines to Messi, who first connected with a left-footed shot from outside the area to fit it into the goalkeeper’s upper right corner and impossible to stop.

This award for the best goal in the Champions League has been awarded since the 2014/2015 season. Since then this is the fourth time that Messi has won the award. The previous ones were in the 2014/2015, 2015/2016 and 2018/2019 campaigns.

  5. Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City (1-1) against Real Madrid semi-final.
  6. Kylian Mbappé, PSG (2-1) against Juventus in the group stage.
  7. Vinícius Jr., Real Madrid (1-1) against Manchester City semifinals.
  8. Alejandro Grimaldo, Benfica (2-0) against Maccabi Haifa in the group stage.
  9. Darwin Núñez, Liverpool (5-2) against Real Madrid in the round of 16.
  10. Erling Haaland, Manchester City (2-1) against Borussia Dortmund in the group stage.

Was it deserved for Messi?

Despite the fact that Messi led the voting, in the official list made by UEFA’s technical observers, the Argentine’s goal occupies the third position. Surpassed by Vinícius Jr.’s goal against Manchester City in the semifinals and the number 1 that went to Erling Haaland against Dortmund for his acrobatic definition.
