why-are-we-hungry-after-a-night-out?

If you are one of the people who after a night out makes you want to eat dinner or want pizza, a hamburger or something else, this is because the consumption of alcohol and snacks are high in calories and activate the brain’s reward circuit .

According to the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), the action of “overdining, having dinner for the second time, at the wrong time” is called zahorar, which is what happens after a night out.

Alcoholic beverages and tasty foods high in fat, sugar and/or salt activate our desire to eat. There are many reasons why it causes us to eat after hours, however, alcohol consumption activates our appetite, added to the popular belief that eating will help us not have a hangover.

Dr. Belén Unzeta from the Santa Cristina University Hospital explains to La Vanguardia that excessive consumption of alcohol, marijuana and staying up all night can generate this effect.

Unzeta maintains that “alcohol is one of the main triggers, since its disinhibiting effect causes loss of control.” When we go out to a party we usually drink alcoholic beverages.

This is how the combination of fat and alcohol works

Also remember that “excessive consumption of high-fat diets and alcohol abuse can use the same brain circuitry. Both alcohol and tasty foods (high in fat, sugar, and/or salt) are calorically dense, and activate the brain’s reward circuitry and can facilitate excessive calorie intake.”

This approach is based on studies that suggest “that hormones such as ghrelin or leptin, traditionally associated with appetite control, are also involved in aspects.”

Regarding marijuana use, he explains “the cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main way in which cannabis could affect appetite.”

This is because “THC partially binds to and activates CB1 receptors in the basal ganglia, limbic forebrain, hypothalamus, and rhombencephalon, where it might increase the pleasure of eating, improve food palatability, and regulate food consumption, respectively,” the publication states.

The doctor assures that there is evidence of the relationship between the abuse of substances such as alcohol, tobacco or cannabis “with disorders in the pattern of food intake: 30.6% met the criteria for diagnosis.”

Consequences of eating at odd hours

When we go to a party and come home hungry, we eat after hours. Unzeta points out that “eating at odd hours, when it alters the sleep cycle, can be considered an eating disorder already described in 1955 by Albert J. Stunkard and included in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as eating syndrome night”.

He emphasizes that “the patient affected by this syndrome can eat 50% of the total calories in a day after the last meal of the day, even waking up at night to eat and being fully conscious when doing so.”

Remember that nutrition experts recommend eating 5 meals a day,” with breakfast and lunch being the large calorie intake, over 50%, with mid-morning and snack intake over 15% and dinner being limited to 20%”.
