The story of former Mexican boxer Oscar de la Hoya will become even more iconic after the HBO streaming platform released a documentary titled “The Golden Boy” this Monday, in which they delve into their most important achievements, but also their greatest fears and dark times.

This documentary, whose premiere was announced by the production company itself, consists of several interviews in which the 50-year-old former boxer tells how his laureate career was, in which the conquest of the gold medal at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 and the 11 world titles won in six different categories stand out.

De la Hoya, born in Los Angeles in a community of Mexican immigrants, won the affection of his public, becoming considered a hero who was expected to be an example for the youngest to follow, however, his career and life were embroiled in several scandals.

“Golden Boy”, whose title honors the nickname given to the Mexican boxer because of how outstanding his beginnings were, is a documentary directed by Fernando Villena, which delves into history of a human being beyond sport, who could not bear “the impossible burden of a nickname that he could not fulfill”, HBO explained.

Shortly after the launch of the audiovisual, De la Hoya made an invitation, very much in his style, so that his fans, detractors and the general public could learn about his story. “Let’s say that all the crap you talk about me is nothing compared to what I lived through,” he wrote on his Twitter account.

The documentary also features the participation of family, friends and associates of the athlete, including his father Joel, his sister Cecilia, his brother Joel Jr., his children Atiana, Jacob, and Devon, and his ex-fiancée Shanna Moakler.

Former trainer Jesús Rivero, boxing promoter Bob Arum and boxing legend Bernard Hopkins also take part in the documentary.
