Inter Miami managed to make history this Saturday by winning its first title in its short history after beating Nashville SC on penalties after equalizing 1-1 in regulation time and managing to lift the Leagues Cup.
An agonizing penalty shootout of up to 22 shots was enough for Lionel Messi and his team to make all of Florida celebrate.
Regarding the development of the match, as has been the case in previous matches, Inter Miami came out hungry for a goal in the first minutes, hoping that they could resolve the match as soon as possible and thanks to this the Florida team started hitting hard on the scoreboard. .
And in the end the usual was the one who could solve: Lionel Messi. A gallop through the left sector of the Venezuelan attacker Josef Martínez ended with a filtered pass attempt that was rejected by the defense, but Messi collected the rebound in the crescent, cut a defender and launched a strong shot placed from outside the area that was became one of the most beautiful goals of the entire tournament.
After the goal the balance tipped in favor of Inter Miami, which was able to increase the difference on a couple of occasions but the lack of aim took its toll.
This was enough for the Haitian Fafa Picault to score in the 57th minute after a corner kick, with a header that, although it went towards the goal, ended up being pushed by the Inter Miami goalkeeper himself.
With the game tied 1-1, parity returned in the level of play and it became a two-way match, where Nashville himself almost took the lead with two shots that were saved by goalie Drake Callender.
This led the 90 minutes to end with a tie and everything was decided in a heart-stopping penalty shootout in which the 22 players who were on the pitch participated.
One of the highlights was when the Inter Miami advantage on penalties, after Randall Leal’s miss, was not taken advantage of by Víctor Ulloa at the fifth shot, which allowed the shootout to extend to such an extent that the goalkeepers were forced to to kick and in the end his participation was transcendental.
In the first shot, which was goal 11, Callender scored his shot but when it was his turn to save the goal he saved his rival Elliot Panicco’s shot to lead Inter Miami to glory.
This is the first title that the currency has achieved in just three years of history and will serve as a boost so that in the second half of the season Inter Miami can come out on top and stop occupying the last position in the Eastern Division in MLS.
