The goalkeeper of RKC Waalwijk of the Eredivisie, Etienne Vaessen, starred in the scare of the day in European football after he collapsed after a collision with an Ajax attacker and had to be revived and taken to hospital for stabilization.
During matchday seven of the Dutch first division, Ajax was leading Waalwijk 3-2 as a visitor in the 85th minute when a clearly dangerous action ended up stopping the actions.
The goalkeeper went to bail out a one-on-one from the Ajax forward with the misfortune that ended up impacting the opponent’s knee, leaving him immediately unconscious and inviting him to think of the worst.
After the action, the medical team rushed to help Etienne while the players of both teams remained dismayed by the goalkeeper’s state of health.
The atmosphere became more tense when one of the Waalwijk doctors asked the band for an automatic external defibrillator with the need to resuscitate the affected person.
The seriousness of the situation led to the game being suspended four minutes later so that Vaessen could leave the field in an ambulance and escorted by the two teams who at all times remained by his side to preserve his humanity.
When the announcer announced the definitive suspension of the match, thousands of fans began to sing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” in dedication to Vaessen while the players paraded back to the locker room.
According to local media reports, Vaessen regained consciousness once he was taken by ambulance to the hospital and it is expected that in the next few hours the club will provide a medical report on his figure.
