The iconic helmet worn by Mexican Sergio “Checo” Pérez was auctioned after the Mexican GP for a good cause. In just a few hours, a million-dollar fundraiser was raised that will go to support those affected by Hurricane Otis, especially in Acapulco, one of the cities most affected by the natural phenomenon.
Through the Checo Pérez Foundation, the Red Bull driver opened a bid for the helmet he used at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. With a base price of 500,000 Mexican pesos (just over $27,800 dollars), the auction was a success, and managed to raise 1.7 million Mexican pesos (about $94,566 dollars).
“Auction closed! We thank each person for participating and helping us spread the word. Our brothers from Guerrero will appreciate it. Thank you all for always being here! And thanks to Checo Pérez for making this a reality. United for Mexico,” the foundation said in a statement shared by the social network X (formerly Twitter).
Checo also opened a bank account to make donations and support the people of Acapulco.
Checo Pérez paid tribute to his country’s GP with his helmet, this time the Day of the Dead being the theme of its colors, with orange details of the marigold flower, which has been used since pre-Hispanic times to decorate the helmets. tombs and offerings.
Other details were also included such as the confetti in yellow, green, orange and pink, maguey plants and its motto ‘Never Give Up’.
