Sofía Vergara will face one of the most challenging roles of her career in the new Netflix series called Griselda. The Colombian, recognized mainly for her role in the comedy series Modern Family, will step into the shoes of the so-called “Godmother” of drug trafficking: Griselda Blanco.

The series, which released its first trailer this day, will tell the life of the Colombian drug trafficker, who became the leader of one of the most profitable cartels in history. Who was Griselda Blanco?

Also known as “The Black Widow” or “The Godmother of Cocaine,” Ana Griselda Blanco Restrepo was a Colombian drug trafficker and founder of the Medellín cartel, one of the criminal groups with the greatest influence in the drug market.

After a complicated childhood, and in which he began his criminal career as the leader of a gang of pickpockets in the city of Medellín, Blanco emigrated to the city of Queens, New York, in 1964, along with his 3 children from his first marriage with Carlos Trujillo: Dixon, Uber and Osvaldo.

Later, she married Alberto Bravo, a cocaine drug trafficker who introduced her to the business as a “mule.” After this first approach, the Colombian devised and planned new distribution strategies for other criminal gangs.

During the following years, Blanco Restrepo began to strengthen her business to the point of becoming the “godmother” of various drug traffickers, such as Pablo Escobar, whom she introduced to the world of drugs. By the 1970s, Griselda was already known as one of the main drug traffickers in Colombia and with strong ties in the United States.

Why was Griselda Blanco called the Black Widow?

After problems with US authorities and with her second husband, whom she is said to have murdered and for whom her nickname Black Widow was reaffirmed, Blanco returned to Colombia to hide. However, just a few years later, the drug trafficker returned to the United States, specifically to Miami, to expand her territory in an unimaginable way.

By the 1980s, Griselda was already known as one of the people with the greatest influence and weight in the world of drugs, to the point of “commanding” everything related to cocaine in the city of Miami, Medellín and other locations. nearby. However, in 1985, Black Widow was arrested by US authorities on charges of manufacturing, importing and distributing cocaine.

While serving the stipulated 15 years in prison, in 1998, Blanco pleaded guilty to three more murders, for which she was sentenced to 20 years in prison to run concurrently. Finally, and after suffering a heart attack in prison in 2002, Blanco was released in 2004, to return to Medellín, where she lived her last years until her murder in 2012.
