Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, assured that his country would not sit idly by if the United States attacked them, and would give a “decisive” response if its interests or its citizens were threatened.
Iravani added that Iranian retaliation would be “strong” and noted that there had been no exchange of messages between Iran and the United States in recent days, the state news agency IRNA reported. The statements come amid rising tensions between Tehran and Washington following the murder of three US soldiers in Jordan.
For his part, the commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, General Hossein Salami, warned the United States and its allies that Iran was prepared for war if necessary.
Salami said during an event Wednesday that Iran would not leave any threat unanswered and was not afraid of war, although it is not an option they pursue.
The statements by Iranian authorities come after President Joe Biden accused the Middle Eastern nation of being behind the drone attack that killed the three American soldiers, and warned that this action warrants a plan to respond, although not gave more details.
Sergeant William Jerome Rivers, 46, Private Kennedy Ladon Sanders, 24, and Specialist Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, 23, were those killed after the attack. Likewise, more than 40 soldiers were injured.
However, despite Biden’s statements, he clarified on Tuesday that he did not want to start a broader war in the Middle East: “I don’t think we need a broader war in the Middle East. “That’s not what I’m looking for.”
