Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martínez, the star goalkeeper of the Argentine team, surprised by ruling out that his iconic save on Kolo Muani in the final against France was his best moment in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, ensuring that his most notable intervention was during the match against Mexico in the group stage.
Martínez highlighted that his best save was on a free kick by Alexis Vega just before halftime when the score was tied 0-0. This save was crucial since it came after Argentina’s 2-1 defeat against Saudi Arabia, and after this intervention, the Albiceleste managed to win 2-0 against Mexico.
“In the game I didn’t feel that Kolo Muani’s save was a great save. For me, the most difficult and the one that gave me the most confidence was the save against Mexico from a free kick, it was my first save of the World Cup, we were 0-0, we were playing poorly,” mentioned ‘Dibu’ Martínez in an interview for DSports Radio 103.1 FM, collected by TUDN.
Despite his outstanding performance in the final against France and having won the Golden Glove at the Qatar 2022 World Cup, as well as The Best award for best goalkeeper of the year, Martínez considers that his most difficult match was against Saudi Arabia. In that match, he received two shots and both resulted in goals, which left him with great frustration as this was his first match in a World Cup.
The save on Kolo Muani in the final was crucial, as it came in the last minute of extra time when the score was tied 3-3, just before the penalty shootout that established Argentina as world champions.
