A second Republican congressman warned that he will join the attempt to overthrow the speaker of the House of Representatives, fellow Republican Mike Johnson, for his handling of foreign aid to Ukraine and other issues. Johnson warned that he will not resign from office.

Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky announced that he will join the proposal of far-right congresswoman Maryorie Taylor Greene. Massie, who is a member of Johnson’s own Rules Committee, said he informed Johnson of his decision during a closed-door Republican conference meeting.

“He should pre-announce his resignation (as Boehner did), so we can elect a new president without ever being without a GOP president,” Massie wrote in X about Johnson.

Massie is referring to former Republican Party Chairman John Boehner, who resigned mid-term in 2015 while facing a similar conservative rebellion from Massie and others, NBC News details.

Among the Kentucky congressman’s arguments to support Johnson’s impeachment are aid to Ukraine, having pushed for a funding package this year and passing a bill to renew a controversial FISA spy tool last week.

“He’s going for the trifecta, the Triple Crown,” Massie said of the House speaker. “There are people here who ride him like a horse. “They don’t care if the horse falls,” Massie added, according to NBC News. “I’m doing it because it’s going to cause chaos in our conference.”

After the Republicans’ private meeting, Mike Johnson avoided responding at a press conference about the attempt to overthrow him. However, he clarified that he does not plan to resign from his position.

“I will not resign. And it’s an absurd notion, in my opinion, for anyone to bring a motion to override when we’re just here trying to do our job,” Johnson said after the private meeting. “It doesn’t help the country. “It doesn’t help House Republicans advance our agenda, which is what’s best for the American people here — a secure border, strong governance — and it doesn’t help the unity we have in the body.”

And he added: “This does not worry me. “I’m going to do my job.”

It is still unclear when the vote to impeach Johnson could be brought to the House, much less who his replacement could be, considering that his election took several weeks to wait after several votes and after a group of Republicans, including Greene , they fired Kevin McCarthy.

But Taylor Greene, who came up with the plan, has said she has delayed activating the vote in part to give the conference time to determine next steps.

“The motion is going to be called, okay? Does anyone doubt it? The motion will be called. And then he will lose more votes than Kevin McCarthy. And I told him privately, like weeks ago,” Massie said after the conference meeting, endorsing Greene.

However, several Republican congressmen expressed their opposition to the measure to POLITICO.
