The United States Border Patrol in Florida (USCBP) discovered a total of 65 pounds (29.5 kilos) of cocaine that were wrapped in a bundle or package. A bather who was on a beach in the Florida Keys was the one who found the drug and notified the authorities.

USCBP in its Miami sector said that the cocaine found this Wednesday, May 8, has an approximate street value of one million dollars.

“A beachgoer in the Florida Keys discovered a suspicious package along the beach and notified authorities,” said Samuel Briggs II, USCBP Miami Sector Chief.

Through a publication on social networks, USCBP said that a person who was walking on the beach made the discovery and immediately notified the authorities of his discovery. Agents from the USBP and the Sheriff’s Office went to the scene to recover the package.

The waves dragged the bundle to the beach

Authorities said the package was washed ashore by ocean waves and got stuck in one of Florida’s tourist areas.

Images from the Border Patrol show a plastic bag tied with ropes, inside were the brick-shaped packages of the drugs.

So far, the Border Patrol has not provided more information about whether there are any suspects or arrests or the origin of the seized package.

More drug finds in the Keys

Finding bundles of cocaine or other drugs on the coasts and beaches of Florida, as well as their recovery by the authorities, is a fact that is repeated with some frequency in the state, mostly in the Keys, in the extreme south.

Last August, the mayor of the city of Tampa, Democrat Jane Castor, found 70 pounds (almost 32 kilos) of cocaine floating in the sea when she enjoyed a day of fishing with her family.

Mayor Castor, who before becoming mayor was a police officer for 30 years, was near Marathon, one of the islands in the Florida Keys, when she and her family members saw a black spot that they thought was a school of fish and it turned out to be a plastic bundle with “bricks” of cocaine inside.

And in October 2023, 7 pounds (30.4 kilos) of cocaine were discovered wrapped in a package that was found on a beach in Daytona Beach, in Volusia County, which is the east coast of Florida.
