Without a doubt, José Mourinho is one of the best coaches in recent years in football. The Portuguese won two Champions Leagues with Porto and Inter Milan and has coached the best teams in Europe.

However, throughout his career, the experienced player has made mistakes in his decisions. Well, said by himself recently in an interview for EA Sportshe regrets some things in his more than 20-year career as a coach.

One of them was rejecting the Portuguese team. An opportunity that he had twice and he did not accept to coach the team from his native country. “The door was opened for me to go to the national team on two occasions. The first when he was at Real Madrid and the second when he was at Roma,” said the “Special One,” as the coach is usually nicknamed.

However, on that first opportunity it seems that he did not regret continuing to coach the Spanish club instead of the national team. The decision he should not have made came later. “Last time I was emotional when I didn’t accept because I decided to stay in Rome and I think I was wrong,” Mou explained.

The experienced coach had the opportunity to lead the Portuguese team. Well, in January 2023 with the departure of Fernando Santos, the “Special One” was the first candidate to take over, but he decided to stay in the Italian capital. From where he would be fired a year later.

Mou does not lose hope of leading Portugal

Although the Portuguese national team train has already passed for Mourinho on two occasions, the coach does not hesitate to think that he will have a third chance to sit on the Portuguese bench and this time he will not let it pass.

“If my team called me, I would say yes. Today the national team has a great team, one of the three best in Europe and one of the five best in the world. To make a decision like that, I believe that one day it will be presented for the third time and at that time I will accept. The hope is that the future generation will be as strong as the current one,” Mou said.
