The renowned boxing coach Robert García assured that the undisputed super middleweight champion, Caúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, left his compatriot Jaime Munguía alive by avoiding knocking him out in the fight they recently starred in when he had him practically at his mercy in the last round; He also considered that the man from Guadalajara carried out this action because his rival was Mexican and he did not want to affect his professional record.

These statements were made by García during an interview offered for Fight Hub in which he maintained that Canelo took over the victory after changing the combat scheme he applied in the fourth round; He emphasized that the Guadalajara’s blows were strong enough to be able to knock him out but he avoided doing so to continue putting on a good show.

“Canelo is a fighter who already has a lot of experience, but he also has the punch, the talent, the speed, the counterpunch. He was very good on the counterattack. There were even times when Canelo landed really hard punches, where if he followed up, he could have hurt Munguia and knocked him out, but it seemed like he was letting him live. It seemed as if he was letting his compatriot have more big fights in the future. I think so,” he highlighted.

Let us remember that Canelo Álvarez connected a hard left and right combination on Munguía’s face in the last round that allowed him to defeat his opponent; Seeing that he was going to fall to the ground, the undisputed super middleweight champion hugged him and pushed him towards the ropes. After this he went to the center of the ring to give him space so he could recover.

“In the last round, Canelo landed some very good shots, and it looked like he could pivot around Munguia and knock him out. He could have hurt him in a really bad way, but instead what he did was he picked him up and took him to the ropes. It even seemed as if Canelo was saying something to Munguía at that moment, because his heads were very close, something to motivate him or something like that, because Munguía tried, but Canelo is simply on a different level,” he expressed.

“Canelo clearly won, but I do believe that Canelo forgave him. He didn’t want to knock him out, like he wanted Munguía to continue his career, because boxing is brutal, and I think Canelo had that gesture towards his compatriot. And I have to respect him for doing that. Because I think that at that moment, he could have easily pivoted around him and knocked him out with that blow, Munguía was hurt, and it seemed as if his legs had gone weak, but Canelo didn’t want to knock him out,” García concluded.
