from-beating-real-madrid-in-the-uefa-champions-league-to-defending-ukraine-in-the-war-against-russia:-the-story-of-yuriy-vernydub,-coach-of-sheriff-tiraspol

Yuriy Vernydub is one of the many civilians who decided to go to war to defend Ukraine in the conflict with Russia. And his story is incredible: in a matter of hours he went from being the Sheriff’s trainer to being a member of the Ukrainian army. Everything is more surreal if we remember that under his command, the Transnistrian team beat Real Madrid in the group stage of the current UEFA Champions League.

Vernydub, from 56 years old, was born in Ukraine, a country bordering Transnistria, home of the Sheriff. The coach did not hesitate to abandon his duties as technical director and get ready to leave everything for his country.

Months ago, on 28 September 2021, he led a historic Sheriff’s team that beat Real Madrid (1-2) at the Santiago Bernabéu.

And this time he returned to virality, although not for whatever reasons we wanted. He was shown dressed as a military man along with two more companions from the Ukrainian army.

One of his players, the Peruvian Gustavo Dulanto, wrote on Twitter about it: “May God protect my DT Yuriy who went to Ukraine”.

In addition, he said that at the moment everything is calm in Transnistria, but both his family and he are ready to leave if necessary.
