benefits-of-eating-oysters-worth-knowing

Oysters are a nutrient-rich shellfish that can offer several health benefits. Oysters are the largest source of zinc, they are also rich in vitamin B12 and iron; they also provide omega-3.

Their nutritional content is not greatly affected if they are cooked for safe consumption.

1. Complete protein

A serving of oysters (3 ounces) provides 8g of complete protein. Protein is an essential macronutrient and not all food sources of protein are created equal. Complete protein contains all nine essential amino acids that the body cannot produce.

Protein is necessary for various functions, in addition to contributing to the development and maintenance of muscle mass. Proteins are enzymes that drive many chemical reactions and hemoglobin that carries oxygen in the blood.

2. Immune system and wound healing

A portion of cooked oysters contributes 74 mg of zinc that are equivalent to 673% of the recommended daily intake of this nutrient, according to the Office of NIH Dietary Supplements.

According to the NIH, the body’s immune system needs zinc to do its job. Zinc also promotes wound healing and the normal functioning of the sense of taste and smell.

3. Sexual and reproductive function

The others are a great source of zinc. Deficiency of this mineral delays sexual development in adolescents and causes impotence and hypogonadism in men (low testosterone).
Testosterone helps maintain and develop sexual and reproductive function .

Other signs that may indicate zinc deficiency include: hair loss, diarrhoea, lesions on the eyes, skin and loss of appetite, weight loss, wound healing problems, loss of consciousness of taste and reduction of concentration levels.

4. Brain Health Nutrients

Oysters contain a variety of nutrients that support brain health, including omega-3 and B vitamins03.

According to My Food Data, one serving of oysters contains the 567% of the recommended daily value of vitamin B12. B deficiency is a cause of anemia, but has also been associated with with depression, confusion, dementia and poor memory.

Risks of eating raw oysters

Eating raw oysters increases the risk of infections, one of which is vibriosis, which is caused by certain strains of Vibrio bacteria.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) note that an oyster containing harmful bacteria cannot be seen, smelled or tastes different than any other oyster.

To prevent food poisoning, do not eat raw or undercooked oysters or other shellfish. Hot sauce and lemon juice do not kill Vibrio bacteria.
