The Ukrainian Air Force says its anti-aircraft gunners shot down two Russian ‘Alligator’ attack helicopters in the Kherson region, where the Ukrainian military is currently engaged in a counter-offensive, and one was caught on film.

Ukraine’s Southern Air Command reported Monday night that units of its Odessa-based anti-aircraft missile brigade successfully attacked each of the helicopters within three minutes of each other.

The planes shot down were Ka-55 Alligators, considered the deadliest and most effective attack helicopter of Russia, according to the Ukrainian air force. The reported victory comes as Russia has increased its airstrikes and Ukraine moves to wrest control of its southern regions.

Here are the impressive images of the Russian helicopter crash:

The air command said that the anti-aircraft gunners had shot down the first Ka-helicopter 45 Russian Alligator at 6: 45 pm and the second at 6: 48 pm local time.

As winter approaches, Russia has launched waves of airstrikes against Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure, leaving swaths of the country without electricity. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and other officials have denounced the attacks as acts of “terrorism”.

During a national address on Monday, Zelensky said authorities were working to restore the supply of power and water to civilians affected by the attacks. He also reported that Ukrainian forces had fended off Russian airstrikes earlier in the day, shooting down 45 of the 55 cruise missiles. A total of four Russian helicopters were shot down, three Ka-52 Alligator attack helicopters and one Mi-8, according to the address.

“Today our air forces and all those involved in the protection of the skies did a great work,” Zelensky said. “Most of the objects that the terrorists identified as targets were saved.”

Monday marked the day 250 since the largest Russian armed forces launched their invasion of Ukraine on 24 February. Ukrainian forces launched a counteroffensive in late August seeking to dislodge Russia from the Kherson administrative district in the south, which borders the Black Sea and Russian-occupied territories.
