rookie-who-took-13-years-to-make-his-major-league-debut-had-his-first-hit-before-returning-to-the-minor-leagues-[video]

Drew Maggi’s story had a happy ending this Saturday night when he confirmed not only his debut in the Major Leagues after spending 13 years in the minor leagues, in the second game of the series between his team Pittsburgh Pirates against Washington Nationals, but also also having connected his first hit in MLB.

The 33-year-old Maggi hit a run-scoring single while pinch-hitting in the seventh inning of Pittsburgh’s 16-1 rout of Washington.

The infielder declared after the game that he was happy for what he had achieved and also for having taken “a weight” off his shoulders after so much sacrifice that he went through before playing in the Major Leagues.

“I saw her go right through the middle (the ball on the hit). It’s so vivid in my mind right now. I was happy to have done it and to have taken that weight off my shoulders,” Maggi said.

The moment was one of the most emotional of the weekend in organized baseball, with players and fans congratulating Maggi on her accomplishment and taking the ball from her first hit to immortalize the moment.

Although Maggi’s chapter did not last long, after being promoted from the Minors on April 23 and now again sent to Double-A Altoona, the infielder will be able to tell his grandchildren that with the necessary perseverance he ended up fulfilling his dream.
