The fight for the absolute Super Middleweight championship between David Benavidez and Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez is giving a lot of fabric to cut and so far there is nothing defined about it.

Until now, Alvarez has long said that Benavidez (and other fighters) must earn a shot at becoming boxing’s top star, and there’s no doubt that, after his breakout campaign last year, Benavidez did just that.

He first defeated Caleb Plant in a decision victory in March and followed up with a sixth-round TKO victory over Demetrius Andrade in November.

After ‘Canelo’ left the PBC promoter, Benavidez told ESPN: “His actions speak many words. This was the biggest fight… so for him to split from PBC, even though this fight for him and I was on the table… it just says a lot. I’m not going to be waiting for Canelo. “After fighting Canelo, my career does not end.”

And he commented: “It’s frustrating, but at the end of the day it also gives me a bad name… The reason this fight won’t happen is because Canelo doesn’t want it to happen, plain and simple.”

He stressed that the fight between the two would be a great event because boxing fans want to see it; However, if it does not happen, for Benavidez his career does not end there and he continues to prepare daily in the gym.

“It would be an incredible event… I don’t need Canelo. I mean, the only reason people fight Canelo is for a payday. Money does not matter to me. “I care about winning titles and giving the fans the best fights possible,” said Benavidez.

And ‘Canelo’ Álvarez has in mind to face Jaime Munguía this coming May 4 and in September he wants Édgar Berlanga, who has just fought and formally challenged the Mexican, this would have been the main disagreement with PBC since A different order was wanted for these confrontations and, together, there was Jermall Charlo and Terence Crawford in the equation.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. supports “Canelo”

Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. expressed his support for the Mexican champion in his decision not to open the door to Mexican-American David Benavidez.

“If David Benavidez continues to beat fighter after fighter and champion after champion, eventually he will be the one. And then everyone will want to fight him. Like me, you have to wait your turn,” Floyd told FightHype.

“Fighters have to do what is best for them. He is a future Hall of Famer and an incredible fighter. “Everyone handles their business differently, so I only wish them the best,” concluded “Money,” who retired undefeated in 2017 as a professional, with 50 wins and 27 knockouts, without a single draw.
