Roger Goodell, commissioner of the NFL, revealed that he is considering in the future having a regular season with 18 games, a Super Bowl on Presidents Day weekend, and a significant increase in international games.

Goodell said in an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” that he would adopt a schedule with 18 regular-season games and two preseason games, a significant change from the current 17 regular-season games and three preseason games that were implemented in 2021. .

“I think we’re good at 17 now,” Goodell said. “But we are seeing how we continue. “I’m not a fan of the preseason,” said Goodell, who later pointed to a group of fans and said, “And I don’t think these guys like it either.

Adding an extra regular-season game could, in theory, result in a second bye week, lengthening the regular season.

Super Bowl on Presidents Day weekend

But Goodell would welcome that, he said, as he envisions a Presidents Day weekend around the Super Bowl on Sunday night.

Presidents Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in February each year.

“And then you have Monday off,” Goodell said.

So far no steps have been taken towards any of the possible changes. And it’s important to note that changes to the length of the season would have to be collectively negotiated with the NFL Players Association, as it was when the most recent labor agreement was negotiated.

The move toward 17 games initially faced significant opposition from players, even after owners approved the deal. Prominent players such as New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers responded publicly.

The CBA was ultimately approved with a slim majority in the player vote, with 51.5% voting in favor.
