The Texas Rangers announced that Cuban outfielder Adolis García and North American pitcher Max Scherzer were replaced on the American League champion’s roster and are automatically out for the rest of the World Series.

Cuban outfielder García suffered a moderate left oblique strain Monday in Game 3 after swinging hard and missing on a fly ball in the eighth inning.

“El Bombi” grabbed the left side and did not come out to play defense at the end of the episode. García ends his 2023 postseason as the leader in home runs (eight) and RBIs (22) among all hitters in that phase of the campaign. His 22 RBIs are an all-time record for a postseason.

“Adolis did everything he could,” Rangers general manager Chris Young said. He “went to the (batting) cage, but he was in pain. “It’s not something that’s going to get better in the next five, seven days.”

For his part, Scherzer suffers from lower back pain. He claims rightly that his discomfort has nothing to do with the impact of Alek Thomas’ ground ball in the second inning of Game 3 on Monday, which hit him in the elbow.

Scherzer completed 3.0 scoreless innings in that game, but did not leave the dugout for the fourth inning and was replaced by fellow right-hander Jon Gray.

As for Scherzer, the executive stated that “there was no progress.”

Substitutes for García and Scherzer

MLB approved the substitutions due to injuries suffered by García and Scherzer. The Cuban was replaced by Dominican infielder and outfielder Ezequiel Durán and Scherzer by left-handed pitcher Brock Burke.

Dominican Durán will be making his postseason debut. In the regular season, the San Juan de la Maguana native hit .276/.324/.443 in 122 games, replacing the Rangers’ starting third baseman, Josh Jung, between August and September.

For his part, Burke allowed two runs in 0.1 inning against the Orioles in the Division Series in his only postseason appearance so far. In the regular season, he had a 4.37 ERA in 53 appearances and 59.2 innings.
